Gilat Telecom Connects Astronauts Living in Mars-Like Conditions On Earth

Gilat Telecom today announced that it has been chosen to provide satellite voice and data connectivity to astronauts taking part in an experiment that replicates what life would be like for humans living on Mars.

The D-Mars (Desert Mars Analog Ramon Station) is an international experiment conducted by the Israeli Space Simulation Centre in cooperation with the Austrian Space Forum.

From 15-18 February, eight astronauts will be living in a space station in the Ramon Crater in the Negev desert in Southern Israel. They will conform to the expected daily routine for humans living on Mars – and conducting various research projects at the same time.

Gilat Telecom has been chosen to provide connectivity to and within the space station. Astronauts will use PTT units (Push to Talk) to communicate with each other and with the control room in Rehovot.

Ami Schneider, VP of Gilat Telecom’s Mobile Satellite Services, said “It’s very exciting to be part of an experiment that will advance space and science exploration. We will ensure that the astronauts have reliable communications which will enable them to complete their mission.”
